The following data was obtained in an e-mail from Amy Cheshire (acheshi1@san.rr.com) 1/15/2001
"Joseph Oscar Jasmagy was in John Philip Sousa's band. According to my mother" (Doris Ann Jasmagy)," when Sousa was not at a performance, Joseph Oscar would lead the band. According to my encyclopaedia left the Marine Corp to form his own band in 1892 so this would have been after 1892.
Also according to my mother, the father of Joseph Oscar Jasmagy was an interpreter at the court of Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria-Hungary. Joseph Oscar and his family grew up on the estate of the emperor and traveled with the emperor. I have no idea what language he was interpreting or why they Emigration to America sometime before 1888 but I will bet that is where Joseph Oscar got his music lessons.
Joseph Oscar's son William is my grandfather. He was a pianist who studied at Julliard and moved from New York to San Diego abt 1923. His actual Birth date is 29 Jan 1892."
